Nightscout for Caregivers: Remote CGM Monitoring for Parents and Partners

Nightscout enables parents of children with Type 1 diabetes and caregivers of adults to monitor glucose remotely — from any device, anywhere in the world. Here is how caregiver monitoring works and what to expect.

What Caregivers Can See

A caregiver with the Nightscout URL and read access can see: the current glucose reading, trend arrow, a 24-hour glucose graph, insulin on board (if using a closed-loop system), and recent alerts. The data updates in real time as the sensor sends readings.

Accessing Nightscout as a Caregiver

Any modern web browser at the Nightscout URL provides the full dashboard — no app required. The person with diabetes shares their Nightscout URL. Read-only access shows all data without the ability to modify anything.

CGM Apps with Built-In Follow Features

For simpler setups, both Dexcom and Abbott offer native follow features that do not require Nightscout:

  • Dexcom Follow: Caregivers install the Dexcom Follow app and accept an invitation. Shows glucose, trend, and alerts in real time.
  • LibreLinkUp: Abbott’s equivalent for FreeStyle Libre users. Works across iOS and Android.

These are easier to set up than Nightscout and sufficient for most caregiver needs. Nightscout adds historical data, more customizable alerts, and integration with closed-loop systems.

Alert Configuration for Caregivers

Nightscout allows caregivers to set independent alert thresholds. A parent monitoring a child overnight might set a low alert at 80 mg/dL and high alert at 250 mg/dL on their phone — different from the child’s CGM alerts. This provides an independent safety net.

Privacy Considerations

Glucose data is personal health information. Only share Nightscout access with trusted individuals. The Nightscout URL should be treated like a medical record — do not post publicly. Consider setting an API Secret that limits write access while allowing read access.
