Dexcom G7 Setup: From Box to First Reading in 30 Minutes

Setting up your first Dexcom G7 is straightforward. This guide walks you through sensor insertion, app setup, and getting your first glucose reading.

What Is in the Box

Each G7 package includes the sensor applicator (sensor pre-loaded), a transmitter (built into the sensor — no separate piece), and quick-start documentation. The receiver is sold separately and is optional if you use a phone.

Download the Dexcom G7 App

Before inserting the sensor, download the official Dexcom G7 app from the App Store or Google Play. Create or log into your Dexcom account. Enable Bluetooth on your phone.

Choose Your Insertion Site

Approved sites: back of upper arm (adults), abdomen (adults), upper buttocks (ages 2-17). The back of the upper arm is most common for adults — it is discreet and comfortable. Clean the site with an alcohol wipe and let it dry completely.

Insert the Sensor

  1. Remove the sensor from packaging — do not touch the adhesive
  2. Press the applicator firmly against the cleaned skin
  3. Press the button — the needle inserts and immediately retracts
  4. Pull the applicator straight off — the sensor remains on your skin
  5. Press around the adhesive edges to secure

Pair With the App

Open the G7 app → Add Sensor. The app will scan for your sensor via Bluetooth. Tap the serial number on your sensor packaging to confirm pairing. The 30-minute warm-up begins automatically.

First Reading

After 30 minutes, your first glucose reading appears. The G7 does not require a calibration fingerstick — it is factory calibrated. You will see a reading and a trend arrow.

Set Your Alerts

Before relying on the G7, configure your glucose alerts: low (default 70 mg/dL), high (default 200 mg/dL), urgent low (55 mg/dL — cannot be turned off). Adjust these to match your clinical targets.

Tips for Best Adhesion

  • Apply to clean, dry skin — no lotion, sunscreen, or perspiration on the site
  • Smooth the adhesive edges firmly after application
  • Skin tac or a medical adhesive wipe can help if you sweat heavily or swim frequently
